Celebrating three years of the ManVan

Manvan Appointment

The ManVan project, a 38ft American-style motorhome converted to bring dedicated mobile cancer support to communities across Wales, is coming to a conclusion at the end of March 2017 after three great years supporting men affected by cancer.

We teamed up with Prostate Cancer UK and the Movember Foundation to bring the ManVan to the men of Wales in April 2014, in a ground-breaking three year pilot.

The ManVan had more than 6,200 visitors, helped over 600 men who had a cancer diagnosis and offered around 4,000 appointments. Visitor ages ranged from those in their early 20s right through to the over-75s.

It visited almost 100 locations across the country and travelled over 42,326 miles, more than once around the world.

The ManVan brought advice and support to men affected by prostate, penile or testicular cancer. It offered support from a specialist nurse, one-to-one counselling, couples’ counselling, group support and benefits advice to men all over Wales.

Richard Pugh, Head of Innovation and Service Development, said: “We’re very proud of everything the ManVan has achieved during its three years on the road. We know that it can sometimes be difficult for men to talk about their worries, so we designed the space specifically to appeal to men and make them feel comfortable. I am delighted that we were able to create an environment where men have been able to relax and talk about their concerns, and that we have been able to support so many.

“The ManVan’s journey may be coming to an end, but we have a ManPlan to continue supporting men across Wales. We’ll still be offering nurse support, counselling and benefits advice through our free Support Line, and local outreach across the country.”

If you or someone you love has been affected by cancer, we can offer help and support. To find out more call the our free Support Line on 0808 808 1010.
