The Tenovus Cancer Care Manifesto 2016

Working towards better cancer care in Wales by 2021

The Welsh Assembly elections are coming up soon, and the main political parties are releasing their manifestoes and setting out their plans for cancer care in Wales. We believe that by 2021, Wales can be a world-leading nation in cancer prevention and care. Through our work with people affected by cancer, the Institute of Welsh Affairs and world-leading experts, we have developed our manifesto for improving outcomes in cancer care.

  • Every patient should be able to access the services they need to get a quick and efficient diagnosis, to put them in the best possible position going into treatment.

  • Every patient should be given timely and accurate information about delays to their appointments.

  • Every patient should be able to easily access their personal medical notes and records.

  • Every person affected by cancer should be able to access financial support and information simply and easily.

  • Hospital transport schemes should be introduced and improved across Wales, so getting to hospital is less costly and stressful.

  • Where possible, cancer care should be provided locally, closer to home.

  • Patients’ medical records should be available to each and every healthcare professional that treats them, throughout their care.

  • Teenage boys should be vaccinated against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) to protect future generations from easily preventable cancers.

  • Every patient should have a named cancer Key Worker. The next Welsh Government should review the current scheme and consider the use of other professional roles to achieve this.

  • Every patient should be offered the opportunity to easily access psychosocial support such as counselling and support groups.
