Our Leadership Team
Judi Rhys - Chief Executive
Hi, I’m Judi and I’m the Chief Executive of Tenovus Cancer Care. It’s such an honour to work in this fantastic charity and lead a team of exceptionally talented and committed people who provide help and hope to our communities.
I was born and brought up in Wales and, apart from a few forays across the border at various times, I have lived in Wales all my life. I’ve previously worked in the NHS, in higher education and in local government, but since 2006, I’ve been in the third sector. I’ve held a variety of senior roles in health and social care related charities and I really understand the importance of being person-centred – making sure that everything we do puts the people we are here to support at the very heart of the charity.
When I’m not working, I like to run as often as I can, and I also enjoy travel, film, theatre and music.
Rhian Edwards - Director of Research and Support
I’m Rhian and I’m the Director of Research and Support. I’m responsible for making sure that all the donations we receive are spent in the best way possible.
Without donations from our supporters my team wouldn’t be able to conduct, fund or contribute to ground-breaking cancer research, nor would we be able to support cancer patients and their loved ones. I owe it to our donors to get the absolute best value for money out of every precious pound they donate to us.
I’m incredibly proud of what we do here at Tenovus Cancer Care. Our Mobile Support Units take chemotherapy and lymphoedema clinics into the heart of communities. Our free Support Line offers advice, assistance and a caring ear. Our Sing with Us choirs are a world-class example of how our research has been transformed into a service that our clients, who I think of as our ambassadors, love. We help people who have been affected by a diagnosis of cancer get any welfare benefits, grants, or practical help they’re entitled to. Our ACTivate Your Life - Affected By Cancer course is a four-week course designed to take anybody affected by cancer through the steps on how to control their minds through mindfulness and unlocking the core values to allow them to live well with and beyond cancer. We also work with communities to develop healthy lifestyle programmes.
On me, I’m originally from Wrexham in North Wales and I’ve spent the majority of my career working in financial services and logistics in the UK and abroad. I wanted to work in the third sector as I’ve come to the time in my career where I really want to make a difference, so to join Tenovus Cancer Care is, to be honest, a dream come true. Outside of work I’m an avid music fan, I love to travel, and I’m a “hoomam” to two Border Terriers. Most mornings we can be found running around our local park!
Julie Rees - Director of People and Development
Hi, I’m Julie and my team and I work in partnership with all departments to provide a HR service to staff, and support the diverse range of volunteers helping us in many different roles. We recognise that investing in all our amazing people is vital to being able to support cancer patients and their loved ones.
My career has been split into two areas. I started off working as a Shop Manager and then in retail operations, before moving into HR 15 years ago. Most of my career was with Peacocks Stores where I spent 12 years as a HR Manager giving employment advice and support to over 500 shops across the UK, before joining Tenovus Cancer Care in October 2012. When I’m not working, I love spending time with my family, shopping and an occasional gin and tonic!
James Powell - Director of Marketing and Communications
Hi, I’m James and I'm responsible for all marketing, communications and brand activity for Tenovus Cancer Care. As part of my role I oversee a talented, passionate and friendly team who go above and beyond to raise awareness of our services, fundraising activities, research and volunteering opportunities. One of my favourite aspects of the job is the sheer variety of day day-to-day activities I'm involved with, and knowing I’m helping to make a difference.
Born and bred in Cardiff, I have spent 18 years working in marketing with much of my career spent in London, most recently for Getty Images. I love being back home and that's made even better by working for Wales’ leading cancer charity. Outside of work I enjoy watching films, walking and spending time entertaining my two young boys, who always seem to be one step ahead of me…
Keith Bryant - Commercial Director
Hi, I’m Keith and my role here at Tenovus Cancer Care is to develop and implement a strategy that sees us raise funds, in a wide variety of ways, to ensure the delivery and sustainability of our vital charitable services for the community. I head up the fundraising, or as I prefer to think of them, the Friendraising Team and I also look after all of our shops. With a wonderful team of dedicated staff, and our many willing, talented and inspiring volunteers spread across Wales and England, every day is special. It’s a huge privilege to be a part of such an amazing charity.
I live near Chepstow and am used to the daily commute to Cardiff, where our office is, having been a director of Peacocks Stores for ten years.
In my spare time I like to go on long walks in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley or play the occasional round of golf, which also involves a long walk due to my wayward shots. But my longest walk was from Prestatyn all the way home, along the Offa’s Dyke Path. Over 200 miles in 14 days. That’s like doing a half marathon every day for a fortnight, so you can see I’m up for a challenge.
Hazel Sweeney - Finance Director
Hi, I’m Hazel and my dedicated hardworking finance team and I work with all departments across the charity to manage all money being raised, and monies spent.
It’s a real privilege to work alongside a committed team of people who are so keen to provide the best support to cancer patients and their loved ones. We know in our team the difference that our hard work and expertise can bring to running the charity.
Being Cardiff born and bred it’s lovely to be able to work for Wales’ leading cancer charity. I’ve previously spent time both in the South West and Wales working in a variety of industries including insurance, waste management and training, before joining Tenovus Cancer Care. Outside of work I’m kept really busy with my two boys and husband. We love spending the summer surfing and cycling in the Gower, trying to fit in as much travel and outdoor adventure as we can, as well as squeezing in as many theatre and cinema visits the boys can wangle out of us.
