Mount Olympus Trek of the Gods
Wednesday, 23rd October 2019, Mount Olympus, Greece
On the list of iconic mountains of the world, Mount Olympus surely has a place. Not only is it a geographically impressive peak, rising straight from the Aegean Sea to a height of 2,917 m, but it’s also one of great mythological importance.
Eleven of the twelve major Greek gods resided in the gorges of the mountain, while Zeus himself claimed Stefani peak for his throne. The gods would come together on the highest summit, Mytikas, to determine the fate of the mortals they ruled.
The first known ascent of Olympus was in 1913. Today, an estimated 10,000 people climb the peak annually.
We'll need 3 days on the mountain to complete this challenge - with 2 nights in the high refuges - just to be sure of completing the challenge. In the valley we'll stay in Litochoro with time to sample the local cuisine and to celebrate an awesome achievement.
You'll arrive the day before the trek starts where we will meet at Thessaloniki airport. The following morning we'll have an early start - and transfer to the start of the trek in Prionia at 1,100m. From here we begin our trek, climbing up a very tough 1,600m to the intermediate Mountain Refuge at 2,720m. On summit day we shall continue the ascent - and continue to Olympus' Summit Skolio at 2,911m- to the true ancient home of the Greek Gods. We have allowed ourselves a full day up at high altitude to savour this incredible experience - and we shall stay one more in the mountains - with some time to celebrate that evening. We shall complete the descent to Litoxoro the following day - to complete our journey and return back to civilisation, to a well-earned shower and a comfy bed. Departure: 23/10/2019 Max alt: 2,911m Distance: 35km Min age: 18 Duration: 5 days Cost: £99 deposit, with a minimum fundraising target of £1,350. This excludes flights. Register your interest
