Rhyssa's experience


Meet Rhyssa, our People and Development Intern

My name’s Rhyssa and I’m a student at the University of South Wales. I was with Tenovus Cancer Care for 10 weeks and did a 30 hour a week placement as part of my university course.

I worked with the People and Development Team (HR, Learning and Development and Volunteer Management), where I was able to help with various tasks from coordinating e-learning, advertising and recruitment, training and employee relations. My tasks changed often as various projects popped up and I assisted in creating and reviewing systems (policies and advertisements for jobs). My role was open to new experiences within all different teams.

I got involved because the staff and volunteers at Tenovus Cancer Care work hard to help provide care and support for people with cancer. I've been following Tenovus Cancer Care’s progress for a while now and it has grown into something much bigger. It’s not just ‘another charity’ – it’s a community and somewhere to get real support for those affected by cancer.

I've learnt a lot from volunteering at Tenovus Cancer Care – I suffer with a type of social anxiety, and working with Tenovus Cancer Care has really helped me adapt to talking to different people daily, getting to know others and bettering my communication.

I thoroughly enjoyed working on an event to help college students improve their employability, including some tips and tricks! I was given the responsibility of following up all processes, and ensuring everything was on track. It allowed me to get creative, which is a big part of who I am.

To anyone thinking of applying for an internship, I'd say to apply as soon as you can! Tenovus Cancer Care has been an amazing place for me to be an intern. It's given me the experience and knowledge to help me in my journey to getting my dream job in recruiting and advertising. It has been a truly great experience – and it’s nowhere close to over!


Meet Nadine, our People Officer

Hi, I’m Nadine and I’m Tenovus Cancer Care’s People Officer. 

Rhyssa, quickly became a trusted member of the People & Development Team and we loved having her involved in our day to day work. We met Rhyssa before her placement so we had a good idea of what she was looking to get out of her time with us. That meant we could put a programme together where she really felt the benefit of what working in HR means, and it made a difference to our own work and projects too.

Rhyssa helped out in everything we do in the department – from volunteering, report writing, employee relations and learning and development. That meant she attended careers fayres, shadowed us at meetings and got involved in recruitment. She even played a key role in a new project for us and helped to plan and run an ‘Opportunities Event’ that offered employability skills to students. She was never short of enthusiasm and creativity! 

Rhyssa threw herself into everything here at Tenovus Cancer Care from volunteering at events to joining in our weekly office choir practice. It was great to see her growing in confidence every week. She even got some paid summer work with us too. 

Having Rhyssa here was brilliant as she was a fresh pair of eyes and had some great ideas on different ways we could do things in the team. It was also a chance for us to share our skills and specialist knowledge, as well as develop our own interpersonal and leadership skills too. With the extra pair of hands on board it also meant that we had that little bit more invaluable time to put the golden touches on things, or make a project go that little bit further so the organisation really benefitted as well.

I’m really proud to say that I’ve been part of Rhyssa’s HR career in its beginning stages and really pleased she chose to join us.
