Anthea is a fundraiser, volunteer and a great ambassador for Tenovus Cancer Care. She's taken on some amazing fundraising challenges for us as well as being a member of a
Friends of Tenovus Cancer Care group. She's done tv, radio and magazine interviews for us to talk about her experiences, and help promote the charity and our services. Meet Anthea:
"I got involved with Tenovus Cancer Care after I lost my husband very suddenly to cancer. It was only three weeks from diagnosis to him passing and it was a terrible shock. I joined a
Sing with Us choir and in that choir there was great empathy. I felt that here was something I could do in his memory, I felt inspired to not just sing, but to go out and do other things in his memory.
“Being part of Tenovus Cancer Care has inspired me to do things I would never have done before. I did a 60 mile bike ride round London which was terrifying, I nearly got knocked off my bike a few times! We'd planned to go to Machu Picchu when we retired, so I went there and climbed to the top in his memory. I organise fundraising concerts, and there’s a real feelgood factor in doing that – choirs sing, and lots of people come.
"This year I was thrilled not only to win the Inspiring Award at the charity's annual Volunteer Awards, I was named Volunteer of the Year. Such an amazing honour.
“To anybody thinking of volunteering for this amazing charity, I want you to know that there’s a double whammy going on – you get something out of it yourself, but actually you’re benefiting thousands of people, so the benefit is more than twofold. You know that you’re making a difference to people’s lives, and that is incredible.”
