Meet Marilyn

Marilyn volunteers on a weekly basis at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital as a Tenovus Cancer Care Hospital Representative. She's also a member of our Pontypridd Sing with Us choir, was a founding member of her local Friends of Tenovus Cancer Care group and even did a skydive for us last year!

Meet Marilyn:

"I retired a few years ago from a 20 year career as a Health and Safety Advisor working for Cwm Taf University Health Board. I found myself with some spare time, so decided to volunteer.

"I heard via my son, who works for Tenovus Cancer Care, they were looking for someone to work as a volunteer to work with the Cancer Support Team based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

"I jumped at the opportunity and have never looked back. I’ve lost friends to cancer, so appreciate the pain and worry which comes at this sad time. I have also joined the Pontypridd Sing with Us choir, which is amazing.

"If someone had told me that being a volunteer would bring so much job satisfaction I wouldn’t have believed them. But being on the frontline, working with patients and giving them the help and support they need is incredible. And the gratitude from them is wonderful.

"I’ve met many characters, broken down a few barriers and have made invaluable links with nursing and medical staff, who appreciate and support the work we do. I’m working alongside the Tenovus Cancer Care staff who are fantastic, and together we’re unstoppable!

"As well as volunteering in the hospital, I wanted to help with fundraising, so myself and a few others decided to set up a Pontypridd Friends of Tenovus Cancer Care group. It seemed like a great way to raise money for a fantastic charity and really get to know our community. It’s so much fun and I’ve made so many new friends. It was really easy to do and our wonderful Community Fundraiser is always on hand if we need any help."
