Nicole has been volunteering with the challenge events team at our head office in Cardiff. Nicole really enjoyed her experience with Tenovus Cancer Care, there have been opportunities to have creative input and she’s even gained new skills.
"I’m a Challenge Events Volunteer with Tenovus Cancer Care. I was looking to fulfil a university module, and wanted to do something related to my degree. I found the role by looking at a volunteering website and went for it because it was recommended by a friend who had previously volunteered with the charity.
My aunty had breast cancer when I was 14; she was very brave and had to move into my family home to be closer to where she was having chemotherapy. At the time I didn’t realise how aggressive the cancer she had was, but thankfully she is now cancer free and has been in remission for the past five years.
During my time at Tenovus Cancer Care, I have been working with the challenge events team, creating new and exciting events that will be running in the later part of 2018. These include the ‘Swim for Life - Bristol Channel Challenge’ and the ‘24 hour Zumba Marathon’. My responsibilities have included research and marketing and these events have allowed me to express my own creativity. I have spent time in the office but have also been lucky enough to help scout locations and be part of team meetings. I enjoy being out in the field and the role has given me a well-rounded experience and access to behind the scenes. I’ve enjoyed seeing the events develop and am looking forward to volunteering at them in the future.
The role has given me lots of opportunities to gain new skills and enhance those I already have. I’ve become more confident within the work place and I really enjoy working with everyone in the events team. I really enjoy the meetings because we get to come up with ideas for events, which is my favourite part! As well as being an events volunteer in the office you can also help out with ongoing events which are really fun too.
I have found volunteering at Tenovus Cancer Care invaluable, and would recommend anyone to give it ago. It is great for not only enhancing and learning new skills but you also make friends and are able to give back to the community."
