Sue volunteers in our Whitchurch Shop. A chance meeting with an old friend in the shop has resulted in them both becoming members of our South Cardiff Choir.
“I volunteered with Tenovus Cancer Care following the death of my father. He had noticed a pain in his leg which had been gradually getting worse and eventually sought help. When he was finally admitted to hospital, we discovered he had cancer which had spread throughout his abdomen and thigh, and the late diagnosis meant that it was inoperable. He died within two weeks which was a terrible shock to have come from something like a problem with his leg.
"I suffered an illness myself, and moved to Manchester to be closer to my daughter so that she could support me through it. It was there that I began volunteering as a means to get me back on my feet.
"I moved back to Wales in 2007 and volunteered at the Tenovus Cancer Care shop on Whitchurch road. I work one to two days a week whenever I’m needed, mostly at the till point as I have previous retail experience. I found myself making connections with people I hadn’t seen in years through working on the shop floor because my children had gone to school in the area.
"A chance meeting with an old school friend of my own resulted in me joining the Cardiff South Sing With Us Choir with her. My friend was having a tough time after losing her husband to cancer and the choir has been very beneficial to her. It has been one of the best things I have done.
"The positivity and friendliness of everyone is really uplifting. I think everyone feels the buzz of taking part, both at gigs and weekly rehearsals. I would encourage anyone to get in touch, especially if they think they have a problem, either to seek help for themselves or volunteer to support others who are affected by cancer.”
