Inspiring Award 2019

Volunteer Awards 2019

Nominations

Carol Owen

Carol could be nominated in any of the categories but the one that shines above all is Inspirational.

As the longest serving member of Llandeilo Friends of Tenovus Cancer Care Group, Carol has worked tirelessly to guide the group, known locally as ‘The Golden Girls’, for over 30 successful years; bringing the community together and raising over half a million pounds. Carol has that rare talent of making people feel special, a winning smile and a mischievous sense of humour. She’s inspired a network of supporters who give their time and skills out of love and respect to her.

In 2012 Carol was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Honours list for her work in and around Llandeilo. She even ensured that Tenovus Cancer Care is well known in Llandeilo by organising a visit from the Mobile Support Unit.

Although in her 80s Carol shows no sign of slowing down. She’s tenacious, wise and dedicated to the cause. Within Llandeilo, Tenovus Cancer Care is synonymous with Carol.

Marion Ashton

Marion’s commitment to Tenovus Cancer Care is truly immeasurable and inspirational. She’s put her heart and soul into raising funds for the charity.

For the last five years she’s acted as chairperson for Abergavenny Friends of Tenovus Cancer Care Group and has been the driving force in raising an incredible £80,000.

Marion sings with the Abergavenny Sing with Us choir where she organises fundraising events so that people affected by cancer can get to know one another. She’s also a member of Abergavenny Chatty Crafters, making and selling items for the charity.

Marion is always thinking of new ways to fundraise, it’s like a full time job! Her infectious persona inspires tremendous support from her committee and fellow choristers. She doesn’t shy away from a challenge and her enthusiasm is inspiring. The charity wouldn’t have the fantastic support from the local area without her.

Sammiie Hughes

Since joining the Llanelli Sing with Us choir Sammiie has uplifted her fellow Sopranos and they’d be lost without her. She’s kind, has one of the bubbliest of souls, and always has a smile on her face despite anything she’s going through.

When she joined she had little confidence but she continues to put her energy into positive things. She’s the first to jump at the chance to support any event or gig, and will do anything to give to others.

Sammiie is a fantastic role-model. She helps out on the welcome desk every week, supports her fellow choir members, and raises vital funds for the charity.

She’s recently hand painted hundreds of “inspirational rocks” with messages of support for people facing a cancer diagnosis. She takes them to hospitals and the Mobile Support Units, so that patients have a reminder that they’re not alone. She’s a truly remarkable human.
