Boost your CV and increase your chances of getting a job

Whether you're still in school, just out of university or college, looking for a new experience or would like a career change, volunteering is a brilliant addition to any CV.

We've got lots of great opportunities at Tenovus Cancer Care which means you can try your hand at different roles and build new skills and experiences. Volunteering offers you the chance to try out a new type of career and gain experience in a new area.

It can give you the chance to meet new people and build relationships that could be of benefit to you in your future career.

Learn new skills… or make the most of the skills you have

Just because volunteer work is unpaid doesn’t mean the skills you learn aren’t valuable. By volunteering you’ll gain plenty of experience and have the opportunity to receive different training depending on your role.

Volunteering gives you the chance to explore your interests and build skills in that area, turning your hobbies into something more valuable and benefiting the greater community.

Get some training

We’ll give you a full induction and training in your role. You’ll have a supervisor who can offer you advice and guidance, and there may be opportunities to shadow members of staff in different teams.

You could be invited to meetings and catch ups giving you the chance to learn more about the charity, ask questions, talk about how you’re finding your role and explore possibilities for further training.

Volunteers in the office can access our online eLearning system and range of in-house training courses. And Retail volunteers in England may have the opportunity to complete accredited Retail BTEC and NVQ courses.

Do something good with your spare time

You may have retired, taken a career break, found yourself unemployed, needed to stop working because of health reasons or maybe you’ve been caring for someone.

Going from working five days a week to finding yourself with time on your hands can be a strange experience. But volunteering can be something new and exciting. So why not use those spare hours to help us?

Whatever your age or your situation, volunteering can help take your mind off your own worries, keep you mentally stimulated, and give you a sense of purpose by making a difference.

Meet new people and make new friends

At Tenovus Cancer Care you can meet lots of new people; from patients to members of staff, to members of the public and other volunteers.

Volunteering gives you the opportunity to meet new people, develop your social skills and build new relationships.

Maybe you’re shy, or you’ve moved to a new area, or you’ve started a new job and are finding it difficult to meet people. What better way to get to know your community than by spending time with other people and helping to make it better.

Increase your confidence

By doing good things for others you’ll be rewarded with a sense of accomplishment. And the better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to look ahead to your future more positively.

Volunteering can also give you structure and routine that may be missing in your life.

We have a set of values which help shape the way we work here; being bold, supportive, inspiring, creative and respectful. Our values encourage us to be innovative, and creative and enthusiastic and they can have a positive influence in your personal and professional life.

Gain some well-deserved recognition

We’re always sharing positive stories across our website, social media and the press about what our volunteers are up to.

And if you volunteer with us, you can gain certificates, badges, letters of recognition and you could even be nominated for an Award!

Every year we hold our very own Volunteer Awards. This is our way of saying a massive thank-you to our brilliant volunteers for all their hard work, and it gives us the opportunity to share more of their amazing stories. Being nominated for an award would look great to potential employers and is definitely something to share with friends and family!

Be healthier and happier

Volunteering is good for both your mental and physical health. Research suggests that it can help reduce stress and combat depression, and it helps you stay physically healthy too.

It’s also been proven that people who volunteer are happier after they’ve started volunteering than they were before. You see, helping others gives you a sense of fulfillment. So the more you give, the happier you feel!

We saved the best ‘til last… Have fun!
