Eligibility

We are talking to people with diabetes (type 1 or 2) who are being treated for breast, bowel or prostate cancer, or have been in the past 3 years.

Who is organising the research/project?

A team of researchers and clinicians from several universities and hospitals, including Leeds Beckett, Leeds, York and Glasgow Universities, and Leeds and Sheffield NHS Hospital Trusts.

Principal Investigator: Dr Laura Ashley, Leeds Beckett University

What is the research/project about?

This study aims to understand people’s experiences of managing diabetes during cancer treatments. We want to identify ways to best support and help people to manage their diabetes whilst they undergo treatments for cancer.

Who can take part?

We are talking to people with diabetes (type 1 or 2) who are being treated for breast, bowel or prostate cancer, or have been in the past 3 years.

What does taking part involve?

We are asking if you would like to take part in one interview. You will talk to the research team about your experiences of managing diabetes during cancer treatments. We will ask you about what has been difficult, things that have helped you, and your views on how services could be improved to better support cancer patients who are also managing diabetes.

The interview will last 45-60 minutes, but it depends how much you want to say. You can take a break if you’d like. We will record the interview (sound only, not video), to help us remember what you have said.

We will arrange a date and time for the interview that suits you. You can also choose where the interview takes place. For example, you might want to do the interview over the telephone, or on Zoom, or for us to come to your house in person, or some other way. We can arrange the interview however you prefer, as long as we follow any current government and university rules around COVID-19 social distancing.

How can you get involved?

If you are interested in the study and might like to take part, please do get in touch with us. Mollie Price, the study research assistant, will be happy to answer your questions and, if you choose, arrange an interview. Email M.Price@leedsbeckett.ac.uk or call 0754 1365 856.

If you would like to speak to someone independent from the study, or have any complaints, please contact Dr Nova Deighton-Smith, Chair of the psychology Research Ethics Committee at Leeds Beckett University on N.L.deighton-smith@leedsbeckett.ac.uk or 0113 812 3151.
