Patients from West Wales who have swallowing problems because of head and neck cancer (or its treatment) have to travel to Swansea for specialist X-Ray swallowing assessment (Modified Barium Swallow).
Although invaluable for treatment planning, it is time consuming and exhausting for patients at a time when they are vulnerable, both physically and psychologically.
The hospitals in Hywel Dda Local Health Board have facilities for X-Ray swallow tests, but no specialist cancer speech and language therapists, and excellent videoconferencing equipment which can send and receive high quality video images, similar to those produced during the swallow test.
We would like to investigate linking the X-ray and videoconferencing equipment, testing whether it would be possible to carry out the specialist X-Ray swallow test closer to the patient's home, but being coordinated and interpreted by specialist speech and language therapy staff in Swansea.
