Taking up running from a standstill can seem quite scary, especially if you don’t feel your best. However the Couch To 5K Challenge will help you gradually work up running 5K so that you can complete the challenge over nine weeks, reach your goal and feel that all-time high of your running achievement! This is a challenge to test yourself and be the person you always knew you could be. You hear so many runners telling you about that ‘last mile euphoria’. Well imagine being able to feel that euphoria every time you run, knowing you’re achieving your goal, all at your own pace. There’s nothing like it.
What is Couch to 5K?
Couch to 5K is a running plan for absolute beginners promoted by the NHS. It was developed by a new runner, Josh Clark, who wanted to help his mum get off the couch and start running, too.
The plan involves three short runs a week, with a day of rest in between, and a different schedule for each of the nine weeks.
How does Couch to 5K work?
Probably the biggest challenge a new runner faces is not knowing how or where to start and often when trying to get into exercise, we can overdo it, feel defeated and just want to give up when we’re only getting started. But the couch to 5K is reliable because it starts with a mix of running and walking to gradually build up your fitness, stamina and confidence.
What are the benefits?
There are plenty of benefits from getting into running. To start with, it’s an easy way of improving your physical health. Running regularly will improve the health of your heart and lungs. It can also help you lose weight, especially if combined with a healthy diet, with obesity being one of the many causes of cancer. Of course, if you have any health concerns about beginning an exercise regime like Couch to 5K, we recommend chatting to your GP and discuss it with them first.
