Writing a Will is really important. It means you can decide what happens after you’re gone and make sure your loved ones are taken care of. Making a Will doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive and gives you peace of mind that everything is in order.
Many people also decide to leave a gift to charity when they make a Will, to make sure the support for causes they care about live on as their legacy. If you write your will with us, you don’t have to leave a gift, but we are thrilled that so many people choose to do so.
Angela has joined our Carmarthen Sing with Us choir, and is the founder of Pembrey and Burry Port Friends of Tenovus Cancer Care. Last year, she and her husband used our Free Wills service and left a gift in their will to support Tenovus Cancer Care.
“I think lots of people find talking about wills uncomfortable because it’s like facing the reality that you are going to die. I was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ in 2007, and the will was put to one side because it was something that we just couldn’t face doing at the time.
“Thankfully I’ve recovered since then, and our family has grown. We have three children and four grandchildren, and as we’re both now reaching our 60’s it’s become increasingly important that we get our house in order.
“We heard about Tenovus Cancer Care’s Free Wills service through the choir and my Friends of Tenovus Group was promoting it, so it made sense for me and my husband to use it. It’s a really easy way for us to give something back for everything we’ve received from the charity.
“We’re both members of the Carmarthen Sing with Us choir. We know that services like the choir don’t operate on air; they need to be supported with donations. I will be helping those services to continue supporting people after my death, and that would be lovely.
“We had a fantastic solicitor who knew an awful lot about Tenovus Cancer Care which was great from our point of view. It was so easy; I think the whole appointment took about an hour with a bit of chatting in between! The documents were emailed to us for amendments and then we just had to sign.
“I felt really comfortable about it all because I trust Tenovus Cancer Care to look into the solicitors they were using, and they sent us to a good place. I’ve recommended the Free Wills to my brother and a few friends who have gone on to use the service.
“I support other charities that I was able to leave money to as well despite using the Tenovus Cancer Care service and it was made clear from the start that there’s no obligation to leave a donation at all! I didn’t feel pressured and its okay if you choose not to leave anything.
“My top tip would be to ask as many questions as you like; we wrote ours down so that we’d remember everything! And don’t worry because you’re able to change your will anytime, like when you have more grandchildren or items you want to add.
“People might not have made a will for lots of reasons but a Tenovus Cancer Care Free Will is an affordable option that I’d recommend to anyone. It’s another service available from Tenovus Cancer Care, while also being a way that we can give back.”
“We’ve been supporting our local Tenovus Cancer Care shop since my father passed away with lung cancer 35 years ago. It’s been in Bargoed for as long as I can remember and even when we’re away, the Tenovus Cancer Care shop is the first place my wife heads for.
“I knew about the Free Wills Service because I’d missed the deadline a couple of times!
We simply phoned to make an appointment and when completing the paperwork we were asked about supporting the charity through a donation in our will. It was all done within a fortnight and I can’t fault the service one bit. We’d saved the cost of making our will and it was nice to be able to leave something to Tenovus Cancer Care.
“As you get older it becomes more important to sort your will out and while it’s easy to put it off, you don’t need the worry. I’ve had friends around the same age as me who have died so it’s a relief to think that should anything happen, my children will be alright.”
