Tele-friend Service Developer & Admin Volunteer

Why am I needed?

Tenovus Cancer Care set-up a Telephone Befriending service in Spring last year to help combat  loneliness and connect people affected by cancer with a friendly volunteer for a relaxed weekly phone call where they can chat about anything – from gardening, fashion, or the weather!

We are looking for someone to help develop our Tele-friend service, by identifying, connecting with and developing relationships with contacts such as local cancer support groups. This might be on the phone or you may even pop along to talk about what we do at local or virtual meetings so as many people as possible affected by cancer know how we can help.

As well as developing contacts and relationships to develop our Tele-friend service more you’ll also support the Volunteer team in recruitment activities and day to day admin support for the Tele-friend service. So, it’s a great role to add to your CV when it comes to being part of delivering a community service and you’ll really make a difference at the heart of where we do our work.

To really flourish in the role you’ll have great relationship management skills, be good on the phone and your communication and admin skills are good. Of course, it helps to be passionate about our cause and

What will I be doing?

Your main tasks will involve, but may not be limited to:

  • Work closely with the Volunteer Development officer to create new ideas to attract more volunteers and service users to the service
  • Build positive relationships and develop contacts in communities where the Tele-friend service can help and make an impact
  • To attend ad hoc cancer support group meetings to promote our Tele-friend service virtually or in person if local to you
  • Input data into our databases and spreadsheets making sure data is accurate, updated and maintained whilst looked after securely
  • Support the volunteer team with tasks, projects and administration as needed
  • Support the volunteer team with volunteer recruitment and training activities such as booking interviews and training

  • A friendly and enthusiastic approach and the ability to get on well with others
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Confident in speaking
  • Methodical with good attention to detail
  • Pro-active with a ‘can-do’ attitude and a flexible approach to tasks
  • Ability to work as part of as team
  • Good IT and phone skills
  • An organised approach to working and managing a project

What support will I be given?

  • The People and Development Team will be on hand to support you in your role
  • Receive an induction, training and development for your role.
  • You’ll also have the opportunity to use our eLearning training system, with access to online courses.

Where will I be based?

For this role you will be based at home. You’ll use your own laptop and as long as you have a mic you’ll be able to make calls using Teams

What about the hours?

We are flexible with regards to what days you would be required. The hours would need to be between 9am – 5pm so you can liaise with support groups and the volunteer / HR team. With the occasional ask of attending Support groups to promote our service. We would ask for at least 4 hours a week for this role.
