Why influence government?

We’re committed to listening to the real experiences of people affected by cancer in Wales to drive the changes that make a difference.

The Welsh and UK Governments have a huge role in preventing, diagnosing, treating and supporting people living with, and beyond cancer. That’s why we work alongside politicians to help represent those affected by cancer and their loved ones.

Tenovus Cancer Care has four strategic aims. Our policy work sits within aims 2 and 3.

Aim 2

To work alongside people affected by cancer to champion their needs, raise awareness of the issues faced and campaign to bring about change, at a national and community level.

Aim 3

To gain insight into the issues affecting people with cancer and to help make sure cancer research positively affects cancer outcomes and experiences.

It’s vital the voices of people affected by cancer are heard and the reality of living with cancer in Wales is better understood.

We want to:

  • Amplify and diversify Tenovus Cancer Care's voice so it better reflects people affected by cancer in Wales
  • Influence the policies of Government and the NHS to meet the needs of people affected by cancer in Wales
  • Prioritise what we do to optimise Tenovus Cancer Care's resources and maximise our impact

We work closely with the Tenovus Cancer Care Insight team to better understand the views and experiences of people affected by cancer.

In August 2022 our All-Wales Cancer Community was launched – the most ambitious Wales-wide community of people affected by cancer to date – as a way for people to engage with us on issues that are important to them. We want the All-Wales Cancer Community to have a say on the decisions that are being made at a political level in Wales that will directly impact on them and others who are affected by cancer.

Our support services are here to help anyone affected by cancer. Our colleagues flag issues and concerns with us – for example, recurrent problems with cancer services or the welfare benefit system. We will work together to raise awareness of problems and work towards finding solutions.

We believe that we are uniquely placed to advocate for those affected by cancer here in Wales. By having a dedicated team of nurses, benefits advisors and our All-Wales Cancer Community, we listen to the voices of those affected by cancer and act on their behalf, speaking to politicians, policy makers and the NHS.

Tenovus Cancer Care’s support services are here for everyone affected by any type of cancer. However, we’ve prioritised our policy and influencing work in the areas we can add value to the work of our partners; amplify the diverse voices of the people of Wales affected by cancer; and also have the most impact.

The main priorities of our current policy and influencing work are:

How do we influence government?

We’re proud to work with Members of the Senedd (MSs) and MPs across all parties to be the voice of people affected by cancer in Wales.

There are many ways in which we influence government, here are some:
