Statement from Tenovus Cancer Care in response to today’s publication of the Cancer Improvement Plan by Welsh Government

Judi Rhys MBE, Chief Executive of Tenovus Cancer Care said:

“We welcome the long-awaited Cancer Improvement Plan, something Tenovus Cancer Care has repeatedly called for and contributed to. A comprehensive strategy and clear direction is an important first step to improving outcomes for people affected by cancer in Wales.

“Right now, it is just that – a first step. These are simply words on a page. At a time when more people than ever are living with cancer in Wales, we need action to save lives.

“Our dedicated NHS colleagues have faced incredible challenges over recent years, which were only exacerbated by the pandemic. More people will die - who may have otherwise survived - because of decisions made to stop the health service becoming overwhelmed. We have regressed, not progressed. While we know the health service is under great strain; it’s time to stop blaming the pandemic. Cancer services need urgent attention.

“For the plan to be successful, it must deliver changes that people with experience of cancer have been clear they want to see. Barriers and bureaucracy must be removed to make real progress in addressing the issues in cancer care and outcomes.

“We will do whatever we can to support the implementation. Our contribution will be directly influenced by the real experiences of our All-Wales Cancer Community members. Tenovus Cancer Care will bring the voice of people affected by cancer to drive the changes needed to make a real difference.”

Dywedodd Judi Rhys MBE, Prif Weithredwr Gofal Canser Tenovus:

“Rydym yn croesawu’r Cynllun Gwella Canser hir-ddisgwyliedig, rhywbeth y mae Gofal Canser Tenovus wedi galw amdano dro ar ôl tro ac wedi cyfrannu ato. Mae strategaeth gynhwysfawr a chyfeiriad clir yn gam cyntaf pwysig i wella canlyniadau i bobl y mae canser yn effeithio arnynt yng Nghymru.

“Ar hyn o bryd, dyna’n union – cam cyntaf. Yn syml, geiriau ar dudalen yw’r rhain. Ar adeg pan fo mwy o bobl nag erioed yn byw gyda chanser yng Nghymru, mae angen gweithredu i achub bywydau.

“Mae ein cydweithwyr ymroddedig yn y GIG wedi wynebu heriau anhygoel dros y blynyddoedd diwethaf, a waethygwyd gan y pandemig yn unig. Bydd mwy o bobl yn marw - a allai fod wedi goroesi fel arall - oherwydd penderfyniadau a wnaed i atal y gwasanaeth iechyd rhag cael ei lethu. Rydym wedi symud yn ôl, nid ymlaen. Er ein bod yn gwybod bod y gwasanaeth iechyd dan straen mawr; mae'n bryd rhoi'r gorau i feio'r pandemig. Mae angen sylw brys ar wasanaethau canser.

“Er mwyn i’r cynllun fod yn llwyddiannus, rhaid iddo gyflawni newidiadau y mae pobl â phrofiad o ganser wedi bod yn glir eu bod am eu gweld. Rhaid cael gwared ar rwystrau a biwrocratiaeth er mwyn gwneud cynnydd gwirioneddol wrth fynd i’r afael â’r materion mewn gofal canser a chanlyniadau.

“Byddwn yn gwneud popeth o fewn ein gallu i gefnogi’r gweithredu. Bydd ein cyfraniad yn cael ei ddylanwadu'n uniongyrchol gan brofiadau go iawn ein haelodau Cymuned Ganser Cymru Gyfan. Bydd Gofal Canser Tenovus yn dod â llais pobl sydd wedi’u heffeithio gan ganser i ysgogi’r newidiadau sydd eu hangen i wneud gwahaniaeth gwirioneddol.”
