Brother and sister take on the London Marathon raising over £10,000 in memory of much-loved friend

Best friends Becky and Evie grew up together, going to the same primary school in Newtown, Powys, then high school and even worked together as they got older.

Their mums had grown close too and it was clear from early on that Evie’s mum Ali Williams and Becky’s mum Caroline Mumby had a close bond because of their daughter’s friendship. Family days out, holidays and even getting a job at the local pub together, their lives were intertwined.

But in 2022 Ali was diagnosed with skin cancer. The disease had spread to her lymph nodes and following operations and rounds of Immunotherapy she remained optimistic about her health.

Sadly, two years later the melanoma had spread to her eyes and brain, and Ali lost her sight. She however never lost her sparkle and continued to support her family and friends with her outgoing personality. She died in September 2025, aged 63, leaving a big hole in their lives.

Now both Becky, 32 and brother Nick, 34, are taking on the TCS London Marathon on 26 April to raise money in support of us.

Becky says:

We chose Tenovus Cancer Care as they have been such a great help during this challenging time. When I sat down with Ali to ask who she wanted us to raise money for she said that Tenovus were there to support her, her husband Duncan and Evie too through help with practical support, emotional wellbeing and counselling.

“Ali was a fashion icon, she loved clothes and style was her passion. She was always outgoing and became part of our family and we all miss her so much.

“Nick and I wanted to do something to remember her by and to help the charity who offered her and her family much needed support when they needed it.

“This will be my first marathon, and everyone knows me, knows that I am not a runner. Nick on the other hand has already done the London Marathon, so he has been giving me all the hints and tips to help me, he will be out in front leading the way, whilst I will be aiming to just complete the marathon and if that takes all day, then so be it.”

The Mumby’s, sat down as a team with Owain, who is Evie’s Husband, and Jas, another close friend and decided to throw everything they could into fundraising to channel the immense grief they were all feeling.

As a team, they have already raised an amazing £10,000 through a series of popular quiz nights and auctions and have set up a Justgiving Page for sponsorship.

Duncan, Ali’s husband of 42 years, says of the challenge: “For Becky and Nick to do this for Ali means the absolute world to our family. It gives us something positive to channel all our grief and sadness into and keeps her memory alive. We know she’d be the first there to celebrate with them if she could. The team have raised an extraordinary amount of money and if this helps even one person/family, then it’s all worth it.”

Evie added:

Mum adored both Becky and Nick, and I just know how immensely proud she would be of them both. For them to do this in her memory and raise this amount of money is an extraordinary effort. Tenovus were there for us in our darkest time and to fundraise for them is a privilege. We have seen everything Becky and Nick have put into their training and despite some really hard times, have absolutely smashed it in true Mumby style. We are so incredibly proud of them and cannot wait to celebrate all their hard work at the finish line and know she’ll be smiling down on them.
