People with pre-existing mental health conditions are less likely to receive coordinated support or access the care they need, especially when also living with serious illnesses like cancer. Research is needed to better understand these barriers through real-life experiences.

Swansea University is carrying out a research study on how people navigate and experience social care when they live with both a pre-existing mental health condition and a long-term or serious physical illness, such as cancer.

They are looking to speak to people living in Wales who:

• Are aged 18 or over
• Live with both a pre-existing mental health condition (e.g. bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or severe depression) and a serious physical illness (e.g. cancer, Crohn’s or Colitis, COPD, or kidney failure)
• OR are unpaid carers supporting someone in this situation (e.g. Friends, family members, neighbours or others who provide unpaid support)

Taking part involves a one-to-one interview lasting around 45 to 60 minutes. This can take place online, by phone whatever works best.

This is a chance to share your views and experiences in a safe and confidential space. There are no right or wrong answers, and participants are welcome to share only what they feel comfortable with.

Taking part is completely voluntary, and you can stop at any time.

By sharing your experience, you could help improve future care and support for others living with a pre-existing mental health condition and a long-term or serious physical illness.
