The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is updating their guideline on Bladder cancer: diagnosis and management. This guideline covers diagnosing and managing bladder cancer in people 18 and above referred from primary care with suspected bladder cancer, and those with newly diagnosed or recurrent bladder (urothelial carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, squamous-cell carcinoma or small-cell carcinoma) or urethral cancer.
NICE would like to hear from people with experience of having treatments for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, and an understanding of the issues important to patients and their families or unpaid carers. This could include having had treatments such as:
- Maintenance BCG (Bacille Calmette‑Guérin) – a treatment put directly into the bladder to help the immune system fight cancer
- Intravesical chemotherapy – chemotherapy given directly into the bladder
- Surgery to remove bladder tumours, for example;
- transurethral resection (TURBT) – surgery to remove tumours from inside the bladder without making a cut in the abdomen,
- en‑bloc resection, where the tumour is removed in one whole piece rather than in fragments
- Removal of the bladder (radical cystectomy)
You do not need to have had all of these treatments — experience of one or more would be helpful.
NICE will provide training and support to participate in the online committee meetings starting in September 2026. Your time will be compensated for in line with the policy as a lay member.
The link to apply is here.
If you need an alternative way of expressing an interest, NICE would be very happy to help at PACT@nice.org.uk
The deadline is Friday 31 July.
