Black and South Asian women aged 18 or over, living in the UK and diagnosed with metastatic (secondary/advanced) breast cancer, are invited to take part in a research study exploring their experiences of living with the condition. Participants must be able to communicate in English well enough to understand the study information and take part in an interview. The study is being conducted by Summayah Zafar, a Doctorate in Health Psychology student and Cancer Support Worker, who is interested in understanding how culture and background can shape women’s experiences of metastatic breast cancer. Women from ethnically diverse backgrounds are often underrepresented in research, particularly those living with metastatic breast cancer. This study aims to provide space for these voices to be heard and to better understand the emotional, social, and psychological challenges women may face, as well as the barriers to accessing care and support. Insights shared through patient involvement may help inform healthcare professionals, guide future research, and contribute to improving culturally sensitive support services for Black and South Asian women.

Taking part involves completing a short demographics questionnaire followed by a one-to-one interview with the researcher lasting approximately 45–60 minutes. Participants can choose how they would like to take part in the interview, which can be conducted online via Microsoft Teams, by telephone, or face-to-face (Bristol area only), at a time that is convenient for them. With your permission, the interview will be audio recorded so it can be accurately transcribed for analysis. The total time commitment is approximately 60–75 minutes. Participation is voluntary and you may skip any questions or withdraw from the study within 30 days after the interview without giving a reason. As a thank you for your time, participants may choose to enter a voluntary prize draw to win one of three £10 shopping vouchers.
