Information and support to help you plan ahead

Talking about the end of life can feel difficult, but planning ahead can help you feel more prepared and ensure your wishes are known.

If you or someone you love has been told that cancer can no longer be cured, you may have questions about what happens next, what choices are available and how to make plans for the future.

There is no right time or right way to approach these conversations. Some people find planning ahead gives them reassurance and a sense of control, while others prefer to take things one step at a time.

At Tenovus Cancer Care, we’re here to provide information, practical support and a listening ear whenever you need us.

What does planning for end of life mean?

Planning ahead allows you to think about what matters most to you and make decisions that reflect your wishes.

This might include:
- Talking about your wishes for your care and treatment
- Making an Advance Care Plan
- Choosing who can make decisions on your behalf
- Organising important documents
- Making or updating a Will
- Thinking about funeral arrangements

You don’t need to make every decision straight away. Planning can happen gradually, at a pace that feels right for you.

Make your wishes known

Advance Care Planning
An Advance Care Plan allows you to record what matters to you, including your preferences for future care and support.

It can help your family, friends and healthcare team understand your wishes if there comes a time when you’re unable to communicate them yourself.

Lasting Power of Attorney
A Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to choose someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you’re unable to do so in the future.

There are different types of Lasting Power of Attorney, including decisions about health and care, and decisions about finances.

Making a Will
Making a Will can help ensure your wishes are followed and make things easier for those close to you.

If you haven’t already made a Will, or if your circumstances have changed, it may be worth considering whether you need to update one.

Planning a funeral
Some people choose to plan their funeral in advance. This can help make sure their wishes are known and may reduce the practical burden on loved ones.

You may wish to think about things such as funeral arrangements, costs and any personal wishes you would like to record.
