We at Tenovus Cancer Care recently had the pleasure of welcoming Ella Kane to the Marketing and Communications team as a volunteer. Over her three week placement, she had the opportunity to work with every member of the team, to apply her university learnings and to enhance her marketing skills.
I am currently in my second year studying Marketing Management at Cardiff Met University, and part of my course involved finding a work placement to gain a hands-on experience in the industry. When I came across the opportunity at Tenovus Cancer Care, it instantly stood out. It is a charity that means a lot to me and my family as we were supported by Tenovus Cancer Care throughout my Grampy’s diagnosis. That’s why having the chance to give something back to a cause that’s supported my own family meant so much to me.
Before I started, I was excited but a little nervous as I wondered if I had the right skill set. But from the moment I joined the Marketing and Communications team, I felt completely welcome by the whole team, especially Carys who supported me through the entire three weeks. She made a huge difference to my experience, always giving a helping hand and encouraging me to be creative and get stuck in.
During my time at Tenovus cancer care, I’ve been involved in a wide variety of projects- from social media content and campaign planning to writing articles for the website. I especially enjoyed working on the Tea for Ten campaign. I helped develop ideas for social media and wrote several articles to support the campaign.
It was fulfilling to see how much thought and care goes into every message the charity shares. I also had the chance to sit in on team meetings and contribute my thoughts, which helped to boost my confidence. The team were open to new ideas and happily explained things if I had any questions. It is a fast paced and friendly environment, with every day giving me an opportunity to learn something new. Working in the Marketing and Communications department has made me realise that even small contributions can have a big impact when you’re working towards something meaningful.
As someone who’s passionate about creativity, this placement really allowed me to explore that side, whether I was planning social media content, helping come up with ideas for reels or drafting emails, I felt like I was using both my creative and strategic side of my brain. I learnt how creativity in marketing isn’t just about the design, it is being able to connect and encourage people to take action.
My placement has helped me grow both professionally and personally. I’ve come away with valuable skills, real confidence, and memories I’ll always be grateful for.
To anyone considering a placement at Tenovus Cancer Care- I’d say go for it. You’ll gain valuable experience, meet lovely people, and be part of something truly meaningful.
Thank you Tenovus Cancer Care for the opportunity and for showing me just how powerful a good message can be.
