Meet Mirain: our Welsh-Language counsellor

Hi! I’m Mirain, and I’ve recently joined Tenovus Cancer Care as a counsellor, who can support clients in receiving counselling in both Welsh and English.

I’m from Caernarfon, in North Wales originally, but I’ve been living in Cardiff for a while now and I enjoy the balance of the convenience of city life, with the abundance of green space and nature that we have on our doorstep! In my spare time, I love reading, running and spending time with my family.

I work part-time at the charity, and I’m also a psychology lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan University. I feel as though I’m able to benefit from bringing my counselling experience into my lecturing work, and vice versa – which provides a wealth of continuous learning and development opportunities for both roles.

I feel very privileged to be able to call myself a counsellor, and to support those accessing counselling through Tenovus Cancer Care.

I trained as a humanistic existential counsellor, and I’m really passionate about giving everyone an opportunity to have the space they need to explore their feelings in their own way. Being able to do this through the medium of Welsh can be an important element of counselling for many people as we’re able to draw on descriptions, imagery and cultural nuances from all of our linguistic repertoire without limitations.

Providing counselling through the medium of Welsh was one of the main reasons I wanted to train as a counsellor, and being able to embed this into my practice for such a worthy cause is a dream come true!
