Tenovus Cancer Care announces appointment of new Chair

Wales-based charity, Tenovus Cancer Care, announces the appointment of Tracey Burke as Chair of Trustees with effect from the end of March 2024. Tracey will take over from Professor Malcolm Mason OBE, who will step down in the spring after serving a maximum of two terms.

Tracey has worked in the public sector for three decades, for the UK Government, the Irish Government, and the Welsh Government. She has held posts across a range of portfolios including economy, transport, housing, and sustainability, and during that time has worked closely with the charity sector.

She was appointed as Chair following an external recruitment process.

As well as leadership experience at Executive and Board level, Tracey has a long personal history with Tenovus Cancer Care from her childhood right through to the present day.

Her grandparents were there at start of the charity in 1943 and her parents – June and John Burke – dedicated most of their lives to supporting the cause. Sadly, June and John passed away in recent years, but both left an indelible mark on the charity’s history.

Tenovus Cancer Care has always featured in my life and always will. Growing up, it was such a significant part of family life, and I am so proud of the contribution my parents and grandparents made. Although I have a deep bond to the Charity’s past, my motivation to become the Chair of Trustees is to help shape the future years of Tenovus Cancer Care. I have been so impressed with the pride, positivity, and sense of purpose of everyone I have met so far.

I will be learning as much as I can from Malcolm in the next few months so I can continue his excellent work. I am thrilled to be taking over this role from him and I am hugely committed to working with the Board of Trustees and Judi and the Senior Leadership Team to ensure this pioneering and much-loved charity continues to thrive and make a difference for those affected by cancer”.

Tracey Burke

Tracey will act as Chair designate until Professor Malcolm Mason OBE retires, after six years in the role. Malcolm was appointed as Chair of Tenovus Cancer Care in 2018 following a distinguished career in clinical research, specialising in the management of urological cancers.

I am delighted that Tracey will follow me as the next Chair of Tenovus Cancer Care. We are immensely fortunate to have her expertise and experience, with such a distinguished career, and I know that the Charity could not be in better hands.

Professor Malcolm Mason OBE

On behalf of everyone at Tenovus Cancer Care, I would like to extend our gratitude for the outstanding contribution Malcolm has made during his tenure and thank him for the incredible support he’s provided to me, the board, and everyone across the organisation.

We are thrilled to welcome Tracey and look forward to the next chapter under her leadership. We are confident her expertise and personal motivation for supporting the charity will be instrumental in driving our mission forward.
