The University of Southampton are inviting people who have had a diagnosis of cancer to take part in a research study called Development and testing of a screening tool to identify need for support for people who have had a cancer diagnosis. (PACC2)

It is a priority in the UK that every person diagnosed with cancer has access to personalised care and support. This means that people’s needs, such as physical, practical, emotional, and social needs, are fully identified and individual support planned.

It is recognised that some people will need different support than others to manage their illness and treatment in order to maximise their health and wellbeing. The University of Southampton have received funding to develop a short screening tool that can be used in clinical practice to rapidly and accurately identify need and tailor the support provided to the individual person with cancer. Version 1 of the screening tool has been developed and needs to be tested by people who have had a diagnosis of cancer, are aged 18 or older and are resident in the UK.

The survey asks some short questions about you and your experience with cancer, about how you have been feeling, how you cope and manage your health, your social support and your quality of life. All the questions are either multiple-choice questions or require a one- or two-word text answer and we anticipate it will take 10 to 15 minutes. The data collected can then be analysed to see what changes need to be made.

Further details about the study can be found in the Information Sheet at the start of the survey.

All data will be stored securely and will only be accessible to members of the research team. The study has been approved by the University of Southampton Ethics Committee (ref. 110170).
