The best way to recruit patients to a medical trial and enable them to stick with it, is by being transparent from the start about expectations. The patient information sheet should do a lot of this work, so it is important that it contains the right information at the right level to be understood by patients and carers.
The Experimental Cancer Medicines Centre network (ECMC) Cardiff is looking for patients and carers to take part in an online focus group on 16 July 2026.
They want your feedback on the information that people receive before deciding to join a medical trial. Your views will help ensure that these documents are easy to understand.
Who can take part?
You can take part in you have lived experience, as a patient or carer, of:
- Lung cancer
- Head and neck cancer
- Bladder cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Endometrial cancer
- Cholangiocarcinoma
You can also take part if you have experience of an early-phase clinical trial.
What will you do?
Before the session, you will receive patient information documents to read. This will be a Patient Information Sheet and a Summary Patient Information Sheet.
During the 90-minute online focus group, you will discuss your thoughts with other participants. The discussion will focus on:
- Information about possible side effects
- Scientific and medical explanations
- How clear and easy the information is to understand
You will be guided through by experienced patient and public involvement facilitators, and a lay representative will also be there to provide support. As well as payment for attending the online focus group you will receive payment for an hour of your time to read the information documents before the meeting.
What happens to your feedback?
Your comments and suggestions will be shared directly with the industry partner who produced the information. They will demonstrate how any changes have been implemented.
Payment
Participants will receive £27.50 per hour for taking part.
If you have caring responsibilities and need to make alternative arrangements to attend, a carer payment may also be available.
