Cancer can change your finances as well as your health – The reality of living with cancer

A cancer diagnosis can affect far more than your health. It can bring extra costs you didn't plan for, less income if you've had to cut your hours or stop work altogether, and a benefits system that's difficult to navigate at exactly the moment you have the least energy for it.

That's why we've launched Money and More Cymru, a new financial health and wellbeing service for people affected by cancer across Wales, funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and delivered by us in partnership with organisations across the country.

What is Money and More Cymru?

Money and More Cymru makes sure anyone affected by cancer who needs support with welfare benefits, financial concerns or wider wellbeing issues gets the right guidance, tailored to their situation.

That might mean help understanding what you're entitled to, support with a benefits application, guidance on managing energy costs or debt, or simply someone to talk your options through with. Whatever's weighing on you, our Benefits Advisors are here to help.

The service is for anyone affected by cancer, whether that's you, someone you care for, or a family member.

We spoke to Helen, one of our Benefits Advisors:

"The role of a Benefits Advisor, particularly working in the charity sector is very rewarding and being able to maximise household income at a very stressful time is so important.

It's good to know that for those who need benefits advice they will have the same advisor alongside them throughout their journey - from the very first conversation until they no longer need our support. Having that familiar voice and someone they know and trust can be incredibly reassuring when so much else may feel unfamiliar."

How does it work?
  • You complete our online referral form, available in Welsh and English, or call our free Support Line on 0808 808 1010 if you'd rather talk it through.
  • One of our Benefits Advisors carries out an initial assessment based on what you've told us.
  • We identify the full range of support you might need and provide guidance as quickly as possible.
  • If you need more specialist or ongoing advice, we'll either support you directly or connect you with one of our trusted regional partners, so you're never passed from pillar to post.

There's no need to work out what kind of help you need before you get in touch. We'll take it from there.

Healthcare professionals and other organisations can also refer someone on their behalf, with their consent, using our referral form, this leaflet, or by calling our Support Line.

We're here to help

Money and More Cymru means one less thing to work out on your own, at a time when there's already so much to think about.

Lisa, from Newport, accessed benefits advice during her treatment:

My benefits advisor was so lovely and had so much knowledge and skill to support and advise me. She has taken away a significant part of the burden and reduced the barriers to accessing benefits. I felt like she was walking along beside me at such a difficult time."
