Farewell to our Chair, Professor Malcolm Mason OBE

This week, Professor Malcolm Mason OBE, steps down as our Chair after serving a maximum of two terms.

Appointed in 2018, Malcolm joined following a distinguished career in clinical research, specialising in the management of urological cancers. He was awarded an OBE in 2017 for services to the NHS and cancer research.

Bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience, Malcolm has been instrumental to the success of the charity in recent years. He’s guided us through extremely challenging times, including the Covid-19 pandemic, and seen us through to the other side.

During his six years, Malcolm has enjoyed spending time with our staff and supporters. Most recently, he opened our 10th Volunteer Awards, which recognised their hard work and dedication.

A talented pianist, Malcolm took part in a 24-hour ‘Pianothon’ raising thousands of pounds for us during the pandemic.

Malcolm has also been involved in several high-profile visits, including engagements with our Patron, HRH The Princess Royal.

Professor Malcolm Mason OBE, said: “Serving as Chair of Tenovus Cancer Care has been one of the greatest honours of my life. It is a unique and very special Charity, and I am immensely proud of all it has achieved. Sadly, though, the need for Tenovus Cancer Care has never been stronger, and there remains a huge amount of work to be done to give those affected by cancer the support they should have. I am so delighted that Tracey is taking the helm, she will be an inspirational leader and the Charity could not be in better hands”.

Chief executive at Tenovus Cancer Care, Judi Rhys MBE, said: “On behalf of everyone at Tenovus Cancer Care, I would like to extend our gratitude for the outstanding contribution Malcolm has made during his tenure and thank him for the incredible support he’s provided to me, the board, and everyone across the organisation. He will be missed!”

Tracey Burke will take over as Chair of Trustees. Tracey, who is a Director General at Welsh Government, has worked in the public sector for three decades in a range of leadership positions.

Judi continued: “We are thrilled to welcome Tracey and look forward to the next chapter under her leadership.”
