Mobile cancer support

Cancer treatments like chemotherapy can be one of the most daunting aspects of a cancer diagnosis. As well as the practical issues like travel and parking, worrying about the side effects can make it a stressful and scary process.

Chemotherapy and other treatments

Our Mobile Support Units come into the community so you don’t have to deal with the stress and costs of travelling miles to hospital. We work with local health boards, and set up in local car parks, supermarkets and community venues. You can literally park right outside, for free and because we see fewer patients there are no appointment delays.

It’s light, warm and friendly on board, with the same clinical standards you’d expect from a hospital. Our dedicated team means you see the same reassuring faces each time, and friends and family can wait in reception with magazines and newspapers.

Lymphoedema care

Our second Mobile Support Unit brings lymphoedema care into the community. Lymphoedema isn’t something many people know about. It’s a condition which can be a side-effect of cancer treatment, in particular breast cancer, which means the body’s drainage system doesn’t work properly. It can lead to severe swelling in the arms, legs, feet and other parts of the body which can cause mobility problems and terrible pain. It needs lifelong management.

There are around 10,000 people in Wales living with lymphoedema and the number is rising. It affects people physically and emotionally, and can impact every part of daily life. It can be distressing, affect someone’s confidence and make it incredibly difficult to get about. That’s why our Mobile Support Unit makes such a difference.

If you’re coming for treatment on one of our Mobile Support Units, or just want to see what it’s like on board, take our 360° tour.

If you’re on a computer please use Google Chrome to view the video, then use your mouse to look around. Unfortunately it won’t work in Microsoft Explore or Firefox.

If you’re using a phone or a tablet, you may need to open the video in Youtube to use the 360° function. Make sure you open it in your Youtube app if you want to use your phone’s tilting function to look around.

Evaluations

We regularly evaluate our services to make sure they meet the needs of the people who use them, identify ways to make them better, and make sure we’re getting the best value for money. We recently evaluated our second Mobile Support Unit and found that the service delivered an average of 195 appointments a month, helping patients access treatment closer to home, with 84% traveling less than 10 miles! You can download the report below.
